Running for cover

11 April 2011 No Comment

It’s that time of year to run for cover if you’re anywhere near Laos, Cambodia, Thailand or Myanmar. The water guns are out. Pails are filled to the rim with liquid ammunition. And children line the streets to soak the unsuspecting

The annual water festival ushers in the New Year for a handful of Southeast Asian countries. In Laos, the New Year begins April 15. Some people observe the holiday with solemnity and piety. Others, not so much.

In Luang Prabang, tourists duck into alleys to avoid a drenching. Or they raise their cameras and backpacks to protect their gear. Others offer no resistance and take the onslaught of water, to the delight of children and onlookers.

The tradition is supposed to be a rite of cleansing to start the New Year fresh. But it’s also a time for fun mischief, with children and backpack tourists reveling in the opportunity to unleash on each other and strangers

On occasion, an angry voice silences the giggles – clearly a wet blanket – but the silence doesn’t last long as another victim approaches and is bombarded.
